The Mighty Insect - A PBL Unit Review

What has three body parts and lives all over the world?

It’s an insect of course and your eager learners will discover these amazing insect features and SO much more.

The Mighty Insect unit is my very favorite!

I love it because it invites a true sense of wonder and discovery in every learner.

This fourteen-day unit is jam packed with tremendous opportunities for learning.  The unit includes 14 days of lesson plans with printable materials for each day.

Students begin their journey in phase one, where they go on an insect search, identify insect features, pose wonder questions, document learning, build insects with symmetry, build insects with shapes and uncover new learning about the mighty insect.

In phase two, students spend time observing insects in their habits and record their findings in a field journal.  Students also learn from insect experts through virtual field trips, fact books and class investigations. As students build their knowledge bank, they visit inquiry stations. Each of the six inquiry stations in this unit offer a deep understanding of insects, their habitats, and unique features.

At the end of phase two, each student will demonstrate their expert knowledge of insects through an insect museum exhibit creation. Students will use various materials and play dough to create a model for the class insect museum.  This fun and hands-on approach to assessment allows students to demonstrate and display their understanding of insects.

In the final phase, students share their knowledge with others through a celebration. During this phase, students invite guests to the classroom to visit the insect museum and hear about the knowledge they’ve gained.
